What You Should Know About The New Google Page Experience

Core Web Vitals metrics will start to impact rankings in 2021.

Google announced a new ranking algorithm designed to judge web pages based on how users perceive the experience of interacting with a web page. That means if Google thinks your website users will have a poor experience on your pages, Google may not rank those pages as highly as they are now. This update is called the Google Page Experience update and is expected to go live sometime in 2021.

What is page experience?

Page experience means that these metrics aim to understand how a user will perceive the experience of a specific web page: In other words, they want to know how usable your website is.

Why are landing pages important?

Google wants to be able to send their user to the right landing page and wants their users to get the best possible results for their searches.

What are core web vitals?

Core Web Vitals include real-world, user-centered metrics, that give scores on aspects of your pages including load time, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads. These metrics fall under these metrics:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): measures loading performance. To provide a good user experience, LCP should occur within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.
  • First Input Delay (FID): measures interactivity. To provide a good user experience, pages should have an FID of less than 100 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): measures visual stability to provide a good user experience, pages should maintain a CLS of less than 0.1.

Google is also using other metrics to help with the new system.

  • Mobile-Friendly– The page is mobile-friendly. Make sure it is optimal for any mobile device.
  • Safe browsing– The page does not contain malicious (for example, malware) or deceptive (for example, social engineering) content.
  • HTTPS– The page is served over HTTPS.
  • No intrusive interstitials– The content on the page is easily accessible to the user.

When you group these all together, you get this page experience name for all these elements. Google said page experience specifically is not a ranking score, but rather, each element within has its own weights and rankings in the overall Google ranking algorithm.

You can prepare now for all these ranking changes with the tools listed above. You can also use the new Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console.

Updates to AMP– Top stories will no longer require AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages). When it launched in 2016, Google created AMP technology to allow for web pages that load almost instantly on mobile phones. The new Google page experience will no longer use AMP for the mobile version of the top stories section in Google search. This is replaced by page experience which is going to determine what content should be on the top stories section.

Googles new page experience is look for the best possible content for the users. Here are some ways to make sure your page stands out with Google’s new page experience:

  • Focus on speed. According to Google, over 50% of user leave a web page if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.
  • Take advantage of developing a great mobile version of your page. People are on their phones now more than ever. You want to make sure that your page is compatible with everyone’s mobile device. If it looks bad and operates poorly, people are not going to want to continue visiting your mobile page.
  • Enhance the experience for your customers. Do not force your users to have to sign up with their email to look at your website. Allow them to naturally want to sign up.
  • Make sure your page is not all over the place. Make it minimal for your users. Pop ups, ads, and anything that takes away from your web page should not be on there.
  • Make it look presentable. Give some form of creativity to your website. Make it unique to where people want to come back to your web page.

If your page already follows these guidelines, then there is no reason to be worried. Google will provide a six-month notice before the changes officially roll out.

Google search engine is focused on delivering users to the best possible result for their search query. Google wants to make sure that users are satisfied with their search outcomes because Google is always trying to keep their users on its search engine rather than the users going and using other one. The Core Web Vitals allows Google to rank each website on the quality of the web page and pushes that page forward to the users.

Google aims to launch around 2021, which gives companies plenty of time to fix up their web page so that when the new page experience rolls out, not much needs to be done to their website to be at the top of that list. Make sure you base your page on your customer and not conversions. Make it unique and special. Google wants to give the best so make sure you have the best.
